Security Licencing Information

12 December 07

This excerpt comes from the Commissioners Information Bulletin 322 (Issued: 3 December 2007) on the NSW Department of Education and Training website:

Licensing arrangements - General

Significant changes to the legislation regulating the security industry commenced on 1 September 2007. These changes, arising from the amended Security Industry Act 1997 and the new Security Industry Regulation 2007, affect all current licence holders and new entrants to the security industry.
People engaged in the security industry require a Class 1 or Class 2 security licence. To obtain a licence under this category, candidates must be employed by a Master Licence Holder who is required under the new regulation to supervise, train and assist a new employee to fulfill his/her training obligations.
The new regulation requires a person entering the industry for the first time, to have sufficient knowledge and competence to work under supervision and train to become a fully licensed security guard. At the same time, a person currently working in the industry is assessed and where necessary gap trained to insure he/she has the skills required to properly and safely engage in the security activities he/she has been licensed to undertake.
The licensing requirements established under the Regulation provide for licences subclasses that relate directly to activities undertaken by the licence holder. Individual licence holders will need to demonstrate knowledge and competence for the type of security work they wish to do.
Any individual or business conducting Commercial Agents and Private Inquiry Agents activities must hold a Commercial Agents and Private Inquiry Agents (CAPI) licence for those activities.
Holders of Operator licences must be employed by a Master licence holder (not subcontracting), unless they hold an individual Master licence of their own.

"Nathan’s story of success"- Circuit Magazine May 2005

21 June 05

Nathan Gill always dreamed of running a successful business. With his high
level of motivation and commitment to regular quality training, his career is on the fast track to success.

Starting out as electrical apprentice in 1993 in the industrial and commercial electrical fields provided Nathan with a good base, from which he then enrolled in several JB Hunter Courses in telecommunications. This knowledge enabled Nathan to create a small team of communication technicians specialising in fibre optic installations.
To further his career in the telecommunication field he joined Data Cabling Solutions, Newcastle’s largest cabling contractor. After a short period Nathan had progressed to project manager in charge of all large fibre optic projects and technical issues.
His first major project was installing Ipera’s 144 core 8km SMOF fibre optic loop through Newcastle CBD district. This included about 70 per cent new boring installations with the remainder using Telstra sub ducting. Nathan enlisted the help of JB Hunter to assist in the training all his team for pit and pipe, cable haulage and Telstra fibre jointing. The job was a success, which led to other carrier’s work being under taken. This included termination and OTDR testing of 144 core Powertel SMOF from Sydney CBD to Mascot airport and many of Telstra fibre links for ABB in western NSW.
Nathan was able to employ his knowledge and skills gained from JB Hunter Technology courses in the Underground Mining industry with fibre optic handing and maintenance procedures passed onto many Hunter Valley as well as North Queensland Mining Companies in the installation and maintenance of fibre optic Installations that ran the communications systems of the mines production.
This passion for excellence led him to high-end home automation and total electrical and communication systems for large-scale homes and commercial buildings. An early move this year has seen him partnering with Scott Kelly from Scott Kelly Electrical in the role of estimator and operations manager of 24 staff with projects as far as Melbourne.
With JB Hunters training behind him and Nathan’s commitment to excellence he has developed a name in the industry as one of the best installers in Newcastle with cutting edge ideas and proven performance in the telecommunication sector.
“With the skills I have been taught we can basically do any facet of this industry, we can cover the electrical/automation control right through to the set up of customer audio, ADSL configuration and set up of the customer’s local network,” Nathan says.
“It was quite hard to find a dedicated training company that worked around our needs and that had the knowledge that was needed in this ever changing industry, but JB Hunter had all that covered in their range of courses and skilled training staff. I would recommend them to any employer or employee to give your staff, business or yourself an advantage.”
